David Cameron Visits Low Wood

David Cameron paid a flying visit to the Low Wood Hotel on 29^th May on a campaign trial ahead of the County Council elections on 4^th June. He was confident that the Conservatives were “making progress” in Cumbria and said that it was important to support local tourism, the largest employment sector in the county. Touching local issues, Mr Cameron said he was a strong advocate of local GPs and county hospitals, such as Westmorland General Hospital. After the elections, the Tories took over as the largest group with 38 councillors, ahead of Labour on 24 and the Lib Dems 16.

Low Wood Club Re-opens

After a £150,000 re-fit, the Low Wood Club re-opened in June. The new equipment is proving very popular with Club members and hotel guests. The products, supplied by one of the leading health club brands, include cardio products with embedded touch screens and the facility to connect your iPod and listen to music or watch videos as you exercise. Vicky Stainton, personal trainer for Low Wood Club took just over 2 hrs to finish the Great North Run and came in 26, 004 of the 54 thousand entrants! Vicky spent a lot of time training on the road of course but also made good use of the new treadmills and cardio equipment in the Club whilst training for the UK’s top half marathon.

Congratulations to Vicky Stainton who recently completed the Great North Run in a very respectable 2 hours 6 minutes.

Kids OnBoard at Low Wood Watersports Centre

The OnBoard scheme, devised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), is designed to introduce young people aged between 8 and 18 to the excitement and challenges of dinghy sailing.  Earlier this year Low Wood Watersports Centre joined the scheme and the first course started in April, with an introductory dinghy sailing course.  Lead instructor, Gary Lanigan said, ‘It was amazing how quickly we developed a fun and friendly atmosphere. It was a real joy to see the kids growing in confidence, starting to sail really well, and, on the warmer evenings, becoming capsize experts!’  The Centre established their OnBoard Club on Friday evenings which enables the young people to continue sailing on a regular basis.   Further details on the next OnBoard course are available from Gary at the Watersports Centre.
