The Wild Boar Wins Guest Accommodations of the Year

The Wild Boar Inn Grill & Smokehouse are among the winners announced at the 2011 Cumbria Tourism Awards revealed at a ceremony in Kendal on Thursday 7th July 2011.

Hundreds of tourism professionals and businesses from around the county gathered at the event. Host for the evening was ITV's ‘Loose Woman' Rachel Agnew who announced the winners and entertained the audience.

The Wild Boar won Guest Accommodation of the Year 2011. Andy Lemm, General Manger at The Wild Boar, said: “We are delighted to receive this award. The Wild Boar team is committed to providing a guest experience as individual as the guests themselves. In only our second year of being established as a four star Inn, it is an honour to be named Guest Accommodation of the Year 2011. ”

Fourteen coveted prizes and two commendations were awarded, recognising the exceptional standards of quality and excellence on offer at tourism businesses across the length and breadth of the county.

Ian Stephens, Managing Director for Cumbria Tourism, said: “The winners at the 2011 Cumbria Tourism Awards are powerful ambassadors for Cumbria’s tourism industry and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.”

Waterhead, English Lakes 4 star property on the shore of Lake Windermere, Ambleside was also highly commended on the evening as Small Hotel of the year 2011.

The Wild Boar Nature Detective on ITV's 'The Lakes'

The ITV series 'The Lakes' returned to screens on Monday 3rd January with a new 12 part series. The 2011 series follows the same winning formula, with each episode following in the tracks of a variety of colourful individuals in around the Lake District National Park.

The new series should prove to be of particular interest to guests and staff of English Lakes as the series follows, Nature Detective, Andrew Mottram in the woods at The Wild Boar Inn. Andrew's enthusiastic interest and love of nature have been a lifelong passion and this wealth of experience and his character should make 'The Nature Detectives' exploits around the woods at the Wild Boar avid viewing.

The 2011 series of 'The Lakes' started on Monday 3rd January with Andrew being featured throughout the series. Please see the ITV schedule for further programme information and broadcast times.

£45,000 Fundraising Target Reached!

Congratulations and thanks to everybody that helped raise an incredible £45,000 in 2010 which will build and equip an orphan home in the Open Arms village in Eldoret, Kenya.  This has been a tremendous effort by all and the results will undoubtedly, and in a very real way, improve the lives of dozens of children for years to come.

The Open Arms fundraising project has clearly shown the dedication and care of the staff at English Lakes who have risen to the challenge with their usual enthusiasm and commitment. The list of activities undertaken this year demonstrates the creative energy that we have within the group:

Sponsored swimmers, face painting, aerobathon, boxing dinner, raffle, salary giving, learn-to-sail scheme, jumble sale, 3 peaks challenge, 5-aside football competition, sponsored walkers, country and western evening, cellar tours at Storrs, guess the baby’s weight, cake baking, cross bay walk, sponsored runners, Christmas gift fair, silent auction, staff raffle, pyjama party, beauty evening, Land’s End to John o’ Groats static bike ride,  photo competition, car washing, Morrison’s collection, pub quiz, tuck shop … the list is long and impressive!

We hope that the building work on the orphan home will start in Spring 2011 – watch this space for more details.

Smoking Hot Courses at The Wild Boar Inn

The Wild Boar Inn Grill & Smokehouse is running new courses from this autumn to teach people how to smoke their own food.

We are working with smoking experts Smoky Jo’s to provide the two day courses, where guests will learn how to hot and cold smoke their own food.

Those taking part in the courses will get the chance to smoke a range of different foods such as chicken, salmon, sausages and cheeses.   As well as using the Inns own purpose built smokehouse the Smoky Jo’s team will show how tremendous results can be achieved at home – on a stove, converted bbq, wardrobe or filing cabinet!

Smoky Jo’s have been featured on TV’s The One Show and This Morning.

For Smoky Jo’s Georgina Perkins and Jo Hampson smoking food is an art, not a science.  Previously the pair ran The Old Smokehouse, a small artisan smokehouse renowned for its high quality, hand smoked food; supplying such gourmet outlets as Fortnum and Mason, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.  They even had the honour of smoking turkey for the Prince of Wales!

The courses will be at a set cost of £90.00 plus accommodation starting from £156 per person for 2 nights and run on the following dates:
