Waterhead features on ITV’s “There’s No Taste Like Home”

ITV cookery programme “There’s No Taste Like Home” in a competition to find the best home cooked meal from three local home cooks.

Waterhead played host to TV chef Gino D’Acampo and film crew in March and the results can be seen at 4pm November 3 on ITV1.

The yet to be revealed winning dish will then have the honour of being featured on the Waterhead’s menu for a whole month after the programme airs.

The show aims to celebrate unsung traditional family recipes and prove they can still have a place in modern restaurants.

Barbara Baty, 59, from Carlisle; Cecelia Campbell, 47, from Grasmere and Andrew Sharp, 47, from Ambleside all had to impress with their choice of home cooked dishes.

Paying diners at Waterhead had to judge between the three dishes before Gino awarded the winner a coveted place on the restaurant’s menu.

Mark Needham, general manager of the Waterhead, said: “It was great fun having Gino and the crew here filming and the diners really got into the spirit of the occasion.

”We can’t wait to have the winning dish on the menu and expect it to go down really well with customers.”

Waterhead is a boutique hotel on the shores of Windermere with an award winning restaurant that has views over the lake.

The restaurant has just been given a modern makeover and transformed into a new bar and grill with a fresh new menu that uses the best local produce to serve up classic bistro dishes with a creative twist.

The Waterhead at Ambleside has recently introduced a whole new concept of dining, Bar & Grill at Waterhead.  Previously the Bay Bar & Restaurant, the Waterhead now offers an extensive all day menu served between 11.30am and 7pm, and then an evening a la carte menu from 7pm until 9.30pm.

Bar & Grill at Waterhead offers a bright, modern setting in which to enjoy anything from a classic Afternoon Tea to a selection of steaks cooked exactly to your liking from the grill menu.  Bar & Grill at Waterhead has the perfect garden terrace to enjoy the views of the lake and the historic steamers dropping passengers off at the pier opposite.

The concept of Bar & Grill is inspired by the wealth of fresh Cumbrian produce that is available right on our doorstep, mixed with comfortable interiors, good beers and wines and attentive, but not intrusive service.

Individual Room Competition

In April we announced our new Individual Rooms where Waterhead became the first hotel in the Lake District to give its guests the opportunity to personalise their rooms.

Following a public vote, today we have an addition to our individual room collection chosen by you. Before now we have simply referred to it as “Modern Teapot” which received over 150 votes in our Facebook competition.

The new addition is an Alessi Tea pot designed by Michael Graves which adds a contemporary look to the much used and loved tea pot. On our Facebook page Kara Harris described it as “a very classy modern piece, which speaks for itself” and Suzie Dickens says “It reflects clean lines and clean living, just like the fresh open air in the Lakes.”

We could only have one winner and unfortunately our quirky “Post Office Teapot” described by Jen Lambert as “kitsch and fabulous” lost the battle. Our Bathtub and Rubber Duck Tea Pot retains its quirky crown in the collection.

We are pleased to announce that Emma Mays was randomly selected as the winner of a stay in one of our new individual rooms at Waterhead.

£45,000 Fundraising Target Reached!

Congratulations and thanks to everybody that helped raise an incredible £45,000 in 2010 which will build and equip an orphan home in the Open Arms village in Eldoret, Kenya.  This has been a tremendous effort by all and the results will undoubtedly, and in a very real way, improve the lives of dozens of children for years to come.

The Open Arms fundraising project has clearly shown the dedication and care of the staff at English Lakes who have risen to the challenge with their usual enthusiasm and commitment. The list of activities undertaken this year demonstrates the creative energy that we have within the group:

Sponsored swimmers, face painting, aerobathon, boxing dinner, raffle, salary giving, learn-to-sail scheme, jumble sale, 3 peaks challenge, 5-aside football competition, sponsored walkers, country and western evening, cellar tours at Storrs, guess the baby’s weight, cake baking, cross bay walk, sponsored runners, Christmas gift fair, silent auction, staff raffle, pyjama party, beauty evening, Land’s End to John o’ Groats static bike ride,  photo competition, car washing, Morrison’s collection, pub quiz, tuck shop … the list is long and impressive!
